Ideas to incorporate mushrooms into your elopement or wedding

Go mushroom foraging

One of my favorite things about elopements is the ability to incorporate you and your partner’s favorite activities. I always like to say that you should be YOU, even on your wedding day.

So if you and your partner are mycophiles who love to forage for mushrooms, why not do that as part of your wedding day?

Mushroom themed attire

Mushroom themed attire is one beautiful way to incorporate your love of mushrooms into your elopement or wedding day. Check out the amazing natural hairpieces this bride included, and her socks as well. You can either DIY some of these items or check out Etsy for some great options.

Mushroom decor and accessories

One obvious and fun way to incorporate mushrooms into your wedding or elopement would be to have mushroom decor.

There are so many options, from mushroom lights, to table centerpieces, to fun decorations like ones from Etsy. This is definitely something you can DIY as well!

Places to have a mushroom foraging elopement in Colorado

In Colorado, most of the best mushroom foraging will be at higher elevation areas and you want to look for areas that get lots of rain in the summer months. A couple great mountain towns to visit to see mushrooms during the summer months include the following.

One important note–whether you’re on local park, national park, BLM, or USFS land, make sure that you’re following all the local land policies and Leave No Trace principles!

Telluride

Did you know that Telluride has had an annual mushroom festival every year since 1981? Held in August, this is definitely an event for Colorado (or visiting) mycophiles to check out!

There are also lots of places around Telluride to enjoy plentiful patches of mushrooms.

Crested Butte

Crested Butte also has an on-again, off-again mushroom festival and plenty of great opportunities to look for wild mushrooms in the area. Popular varieties that can be found in the Crested Butte area include Oyster, Morels, Chanterelles, Porcini, and Hawks Wings.

Buena Vista

Buena Vista is another small town that will sometimes hold a mushroom festival–the King Boletus Mushroom Festival. It has been held in August in the past, but there was no festival in 2022. Festival aside, there are plenty of natural areas that are great for wild mushroom hunting.

Mushroom Foraging Elopement

When E&J first reached out to me about their elopement, they mentioned that they were already planning their vacation to Telluride for the annual Telluride Mushroom Festival. As mycophiles, they wanted to incorporate their love of mushrooms into their elopement day but they just weren’t sure how.

As the planning went along, E came up with some fun mushroom-themed wedding accessories to wear. And for my part, I set to work on finding them an awesome elopement location with some mushroom patches to explore.

They settled on an accessible area with a lake and mountain views for their ceremony. Nearby the lake was an area with a forest and some trails to explore after their elopement ceremony. It was in this forest that I had read about the abundance of mushrooms that you could find here. They decided to explore this forest area and then set up for a sunset picnic after. They even found E’s favorite mushroom, the Amanita Muscaria.

They ended the day playing chess back at their mountain lodge and both agreed it was an amazing day!
